Ontario introduces legislation that would allow three units on one property
The Ontario government introduced legislation yesterday that would allow the construction of three units on each residential lot without any bylaw amendments. The three units could take the form of an in-law or basement suite and a laneway or garden home.
This means that duplexes and triplexes could be built on a single residential lot regardless of municipal zoning laws. For example, municipalities cannot set restrictions on unit sizes or require more than one parking space per unit.
The new units must still be compliant with the building code.
This legislation if passed would go into effect by the summer of 2023.
